Caustic Soda CAS 1310-73-2
Caustic Soda, or sodium hydroxide (NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2), is one of the most widely used strong alkalis in industry, supplied as white 99% flakes or pearls and as a clear 32% or 50% liquid. It dissolves readily in water and is used for pulping and papermaking, textile mercerization, pH control in water treatment, soap making and a long list of chemical processes. We ship solid grades in 25 kg bags and bulk bags, and liquid in drums and IBCs. Tell us the form, purity and quantity, and we will quote the right grade.

What Caustic Soda Is
Caustic soda is the common name for sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong inorganic base. It dissolves easily in water with heat, neutralizes acids quickly and breaks down grease and organic matter, which is why it shows up in so many industrial processes. The solid form is white flakes or pearls that absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, so it needs sealed, dry storage.
Solid Flakes, Pearls or Liquid
Caustic soda is sold in two practical forms. Solid 99% flakes or pearls keep transport cost down, store well and suit batch dosing and long-distance export, which is the grade most overseas buyers order. Liquid caustic, usually 32% or 50% in water, arrives ready to pump and meter on continuous lines and removes the dissolving step on site. We supply both, along with solid 98% grades on request.
What It Is Used For
- Pulp and paper. Kraft pulping of wood chips, deinking of recycled paper and pH control in bleaching.
- Textiles. Mercerizing cotton for luster and strength, plus scouring and desizing before dyeing.
- Water treatment. Neutralizing acidic effluent, adjusting process water pH and precipitating heavy metals.
- Soap and cleaning. Saponification of fats and oils into soap, and the active alkali in many cleaners.
- Chemical and other industries. A base feedstock for sodium salts and dyes, alumina refining, biodiesel and equipment cleaning.
99% Industrial Flake Specifications
| Test Item | Industrial 99% Grade |
|---|---|
| Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) | ≥ 99.0% |
| Sodium Carbonate (Na₂CO₃) | ≤ 0.5% |
| Sodium Chloride (NaCl) | ≤ 0.05% |
| Iron (Fe) | ≤ 0.005% |
| Water Insolubles | ≤ 0.02% |
Packaging, Storage and Safety
- Solid grades ship in 25 kg PE-lined PP bags and 1000 kg bulk bags; liquid goes in HDPE/steel drums and IBCs. Keep solids sealed and dry away from acids, and never store or move it in aluminum equipment, which strong alkali attacks.
- Caustic soda and its solutions are corrosive and can cause severe burns, so wear gloves, eye protection and protective clothing. When making a solution, always add the caustic slowly to water while stirring, never water onto the caustic.
- Classed as corrosive goods for transport, with correct labels and documents. COA, TDS and SDS come with every order, samples are available, and quotes go out within one working day. In papermaking it runs alongside AKD Wax CAS 144245-85-2 and Cationic Starch CAS 56780-58-6.
FAQ
Q: Flakes, pearls or liquid?
A: Flakes or pearls suit export and batches; 32% or 50% liquid is ready to pump on lines.
Q: Why do the flakes harden in the bag?
A: They pick up moisture and CO2 from air into carbonate; keep the bags sealed and dry.
Q: Can it be stored in aluminum tanks?
A: No. Alkali attacks aluminum and frees hydrogen; use carbon steel or HDPE tanks and lines.
