What Sodium Chloride Is

Sodium Chloride is the ionic salt of sodium and chlorine, formula NaCl, also the mineral halite. The white crystals are odorless, taste salty and dissolve freely in water, slightly soluble in alcohol. A low cost source of sodium and chloride ions, it is the most used inorganic salt in industry. Chlor-Alkali, Deicing, Water Treatment and Food Uses

• Chlor-alkali and soda ash. Electrolysis of saturated brine yields caustic soda, chlorine and hydrogen, and the Solvay route uses the salt to make soda ash, the main chemical outlets.
• Deicing. Graded rock salt is spread on roads and pavements to melt ice and snow, the lowest cost deicer in wide use.
• Water treatment. It regenerates ion exchange resin in water softeners and serves in brine and process water systems.
• Food, feed and other. Food grade material seasons and preserves food, feed grade supplies sodium and chloride to animals, and it also supports textiles, leather and pharmaceutical work. For colder deicing, buyers also take magnesium chloride.
