1-Octanol Uses
1-Octanol is a straight-chain primary alcohol with a terminal hydroxyl group and an eight-carbon chain. It is used as a reactant in chemical synthesis and as a specialty solvent. Its relatively high boiling point and low water solubility are useful starting points when assessing it for a process.
- Ester synthesis. 1-Octanol reacts with carboxylic acids to form octyl esters. The acid and reaction conditions determine which ester is produced; the alcohol’s assay and impurity profile belong in the raw-material specification.
- Other chemical synthesis. It can also be converted to octenes by dehydration. This is a different reaction route from esterification, so the required feedstock quality should be assessed for the intended chemistry.
- Analytical extraction. n-Octanol is used as an extraction solvent in selected analytical procedures. Choose the solvent grade and water content specified by the method.
Typical Physical Properties

These are typical physical properties, not guaranteed product specifications.
Purity and Specification Selection
A purity figure alone does not fully describe a grade. For a replacement material, compare the proposed specification with the material already qualified in your process. Pay attention to the following details:
- Assay and identity: The minimum 1-octanol content, the test method and any limits on related alcohols or other impurities.
- Water: A separate maximum and measurement method where moisture is controlled in the reaction or extraction procedure.
- Acidity: The reporting basis and unit. An acid value and an acidity percentage should not be compared as if they were the same measurement.
- Color: The color scale and acceptance limit, particularly where the appearance of the finished product matters.
The technical data sheet (TDS) describes the proposed grade, while the COA records batch test results. Review both against your purchasing specification rather than relying on an “industrial” or “high-purity” label.
Packaging, Handling and Quotation
State your preferred container type and net weight in the enquiry. Packing, sample requirements and any special handling arrangements should be agreed with the quotation. Follow the supplied safety data sheet (SDS) for storage, protective equipment and transfer procedures.
For a 1-octanol quotation from UATChem, send the intended application, required assay and impurity limits, quantity, packing preference and destination port. Include a current grade reference or purchasing specification when matching an existing supply. Request the proposed TDS, SDS and a representative COA for review before ordering.
1-Octanol FAQ
Are n-octanol and n-octyl alcohol the same product?
Yes. Both names refer to 1-octanol, CAS 111-87-5. Use the CAS number on an enquiry to distinguish it from other octanol isomers and alcohol mixtures.
Can an industrial grade be used for analytical testing?
Only if it meets the requirements of the specific method. Analytical procedures may call for a defined reagent grade or tighter limits on particular impurities. A matching CAS number or a high assay does not, by itself, establish suitability for a particular analytical method.
