Adipic Acid for Polymer and Ester Production
Adipic acid, also known as hexanedioic acid, is a six-carbon dicarboxylic acid. Its two carboxyl groups react with diamines to form polyamides and with alcohols to form esters or polyesters. It is used as a feedstock in nylon 66, polyester polyol and adipate ester production.
For a new source to fit an existing process, the specification needs to cover more than assay. Moisture, color and trace impurities can also matter, depending on the polymer or ester being produced.
Adipic Acid Applications
- Nylon 66 and polyamides. Adipic acid reacts with hexamethylenediamine to produce nylon 66 for fibers and engineering plastics. Raw material selection should follow the polymer producer’s purity and trace-impurity requirements.
- Polyester polyols for polyurethane. Reaction with glycols produces polyester polyols used in polyurethane manufacture. The glycol and polyester formulation influence the properties of the resulting polyurethane; adipic acid is a feedstock for the polyol rather than an additive to the finished polyurethane.
- Adipate plasticizers. Esterification with suitable alcohols produces adipate esters used as plasticizers. The alcohol determines the ester identity, so an enquiry should distinguish adipic acid from a finished adipate plasticizer.
- Synthetic ester lubricants. Adipic acid is used to make adipate ester base stocks for lubricant formulations. Feedstock quality should be matched to the ester producer’s requirements for moisture, color and impurities.

Adipic Acid Specification Checks
Match the specification to your process. The following items help purchasing and technical teams compare offers on the same basis.
| Item | What to Confirm |
|---|---|
| Assay | Minimum content, analytical method and whether the result is reported on a dry or as-received basis. |
| Moisture | Maximum water content and the test method required by the receiving process. |
| Color | Limit, test medium and method. Compare results measured under the same conditions. |
| Ash and iron | Whether separate limits are required, with units stated consistently, such as ppm or mg/kg. |
| Physical form | Any particle-size or handling requirements for the plant’s feeding and dissolution equipment. |
Packaging and Storage
- 25 kg paper bags: For bag handling and smaller batch charges.
- 1,000 kg FIBC bulk bags: For plants equipped to lift and discharge bulk bags.
- Custom packaging: We support custom packaging. Include your required pack weight, bag type, labeling and pallet requirements in the enquiry so the arrangement can be confirmed before ordering.
Keep bags closed in a dry storage area, protected from moisture and contamination. Follow the SDS for the supplied grade when arranging handling, protective equipment and storage.
For a quotation, send UATChem your intended use, required specification, quantity, preferred packaging and destination port. Include any sample or documentation requirements needed for supplier approval.
Adipic Acid FAQ
Is adipic acid the same as hexanedioic acid?
Yes. Hexanedioic acid is another name for adipic acid, CAS 124-04-9. Use the CAS number on an enquiry to identify the material.
Is adipic acid soluble in water?
Its water solubility is approximately 23 g/L at 25 °C. Include the temperature when comparing solubility data or assessing a dissolution step.
Does a high assay make a grade suitable for every application?
No. A polymer process may also need specific limits for moisture, color, ash or iron. Food and pharmaceutical applications require separate qualification and supporting documentation; an assay result alone does not establish suitability.
