Artemisinin CAS 63968-64-9

Artemisinin (qinghaosu, CAS 63968-64-9) is a white to off-white crystalline powder extracted from sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua L.), not made by synthesis. It is the active ingredient in artemisinin-based antimalarial drugs and the starting material for DHA, artesunate and artemether in WHO-recommended ACT therapies. UATChem supplies pharmacopoeia-grade material at 98.5% min (HPLC) in 1 kg aluminium foil bags for trials and 25 kg fibre drums for production, with COA, HPLC trace and export documents on every order.

The Antimalarial API

Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone found in the plant Artemisia annua, isolated by solvent extraction, purified and repeatedly recrystallized. The unusual feature is a strained peroxide bridge inside the molecule: it reacts with parasite iron and clears Plasmodium falciparum quickly, including multi-drug resistant strains. The same bridge is heat- and light-sensitive, which is why storage rules matter as much as assay. UATChem supplies pharmacopoeia-grade material, not a technical extract.

Where the API Goes

  • Antimalarial drug production. Active ingredient in artemisinin-based tablets and capsules for uncomplicated P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria, and a core component of artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) regimens.
  • Derivative synthesis. The universal starting material for dihydroartemisinin (DHA), artesunate, artemether and arteether, the active molecules behind all WHO-recommended first-line ACT formulations.
  • Pharmaceutical R&D and reference standards. Characterized 98.5% lots serve as reference material in antimalarial development and QC; in oral solid work it is commonly co-formulated with Povidone (PVP) CAS 9003-39-8 to improve dissolution and tablet processability.
  • New indication research. Active in preclinical studies for anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic and oncology directions, built on its broad biological profile and low mammalian toxicity.

Storage, Handling and Packaging

  • The peroxide bridge is heat- and light-sensitive. Store below 25 °C in sealed, light-resistant containers away from direct sunlight.
  • Inspect packaging before use and reseal partially opened drums after sampling; shelf life 24 months under proper storage.
  • Trial orders from 1 kg in aluminium foil bags; production orders in 25 kg fibre drums; container pricing for bulk ACT procurement programs; private labelling available.
  • COA, TDS and SDS standard; Certificate of Origin and additional export documents available on request; quotes within one working day. State the quantity and destination in your RFQ.

FAQ

Q: Is the artemisinin plant-extracted?

A: Yes. Extracted from Artemisia annua, purified and recrystallized to pharmacopoeia grade.

Q: Which derivatives is it used to make?

A: DHA first, then artesunate, artemether and arteether for WHO ACT regimens.

Q: What assay and standard apply?

A: 98.5% min by HPLC, melting 150-153 C, specific rotation +75 to +78 degrees.

Q: What is the minimum trial order?

A: 1 kg in an aluminium foil bag; production runs start at 25 kg fibre drums.

Q: How should artemisinin be stored?

A: Below 25 C, sealed and light-protected, to preserve the peroxide bridge for 24 months.
