Povidone (PVP) CAS 9003-39-8
Povidone (PVP, CAS 9003-39-8) is a white synthetic polymer that dissolves in water and in most organic solvents, binds powders strongly and forms clear flexible films. It is one of the most widely accepted pharmaceutical excipients — physiologically inert, non-irritating and readily excreted — used in tablets, liquids, topicals, biopharma stabilization and personal care. UATChem supplies pharmacopoeia-grade K30 as standard stock, with K12, K17, K60 and K90 on request, in 1 kg foil bags and 25 kg fibre drums, with COA and full documentation on every order.

What Povidone Is
Povidone is a synthetic homopolymer built from N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone. It is amphiphilic and dissolves in water and in most organic solvents, binds powders strongly, forms clear flexible films, and can form soluble complexes with poorly soluble drugs. The chain is physiologically inert, non-irritating and readily excreted, which is why it sits on the short list of universally accepted pharmaceutical excipients.
Choosing a K-Value
Viscosity, expressed as the Fikentscher K-value, is the grading parameter and the first decision to make. K12 and K17 suit solubilization and liquid formulations, K30 is the oral-solid standard, and K60 and K90 serve applications that need strong binding and sustained release. If you are not sure which grade your formula needs, state the application and dosage form, and the K-value follows from that.
Applications
- Oral solid dosage forms. K30 binds wet-granulation and direct-compression tablets and capsules, cutting friability and lifting dissolution of poorly soluble actives. Povidone is a standard excipient in small-molecule development, including cardiovascular compounds such as Azilsartan CAS 147403-03-0.
- Liquid and suspension formulations. Lower K-value grades solubilize and suspend in oral liquids, syrups and parenteral preparations, preventing sedimentation and improving the bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs.
- Topical and transdermal products. Higher K-value grades thicken creams and gels and form clear films in transdermal patches, extending skin-contact time and controlling release.
- Biopharma and diagnostics. Ultra-pure low-endotoxin lots stabilize protein formulations, enzyme preparations and in vitro diagnostic reagents against denaturation during storage and processing.
- Personal care and industrial films. The same film-forming and adhesive behaviour serves hair-fixative and skin-care products, and film and dispersion systems in adhesives, coatings and inks.

Storage, Handling and Packaging
- Hygroscopic powder. Reseal partially opened drums promptly and keep containers sealed against moisture and caking.
- Store cool, dry and ventilated, away from sunlight, heat sources and strong oxidizers; 24-month shelf life in original packaging.
- Trial orders from 1 kg in aluminium foil bags; production orders in 25 kg fibre drums or 1000 kg FIBC; container pricing for bulk programs; private labelling available.
- Stock grades ship in 7-15 working days. COA, TDS and SDS standard; Certificate of Origin on request; quotes within one working day. State the K-value and quantity in your RFQ.
FAQ
Q: What K-value grades are available?
A: K12, K17, K30, K60 and K90 grades; K30 is the standard stock for oral solids.
Q: Does this grade meet USP, EP and CP?
A: Yes, it complies with USP, EP and CP, with controlled aldehyde, peroxide and metals.
Q: What is the minimum trial order?
A: Trial lots start at 1 kg in foil bags; production orders from 25 kg fibre drums.
Q: Which grade suits tablet binding?
A: K30 is the standard binder for wet granulation and direct compression of tablets.
Q: Why must drums be resealed after use?
A: It is hygroscopic and cakes on moisture uptake, so reseal drums after sampling.
