Melamine Cyanurate (MCA) CAS 37640-57-6
Melamine Cyanurate (MCA, CAS 37640-57-6) is a halogen free, nitrogen based flame retardant supplied as a white crystalline powder. It is the main choice for flame retarding unfilled nylon PA6 and PA66, and in TPU, PBT and epoxy, with low smoke, good electrical properties and no mold corrosion. It withstands high processing temperatures and suits light colored parts, in standard, fine and treated grades. UATChem supplies MCA in 25 kg woven bags and FIBC bulk bags; send resin, flame class, grade and destination for a quote with COA, TDS and SDS.

What Melamine Cyanurate Is
Melamine cyanurate is a halogen free, nitrogen based flame retardant made from melamine and cyanuric acid, supplied as a white odorless powder almost insoluble in water and solvents. It contains no halogen or phosphorus, gives low smoke and good electrical properties and does not corrode molds, and it stays stable at nylon processing temperatures. UATChem supplies standard, fine and treated grades, with assay, moisture and particle size on the lot COA and TDS.
Flame Retardant Uses in Plastics
- Unfilled nylon. The main halogen free route for PA6 and PA66 connectors, switches, terminal blocks, coil formers and small electrical housings in natural and light colors.
- TPU and elastomers. Fine particle grades flame retard TPU and TPE cables, films and molded parts while protecting surface finish.
- Other plastics. Used in PBT, PET, epoxy, EVA, silicone rubber and selected coatings and adhesives where halogen free, low smoke performance is wanted.
- Synergist blends. Glass filled nylon and intumescent systems usually pair MCA with a phosphorus partner, and surface treated grades improve dispersion in the resin.
For glass filled nylon and intumescent formulations MCA is commonly blended with a phosphorus synergist, so UATChem also supplies ammonium polyphosphate (APP) for the same halogen free compounds.
Typical Specifications
Industrial grades differ in assay, free melamine or cyanuric acid, moisture and particle size, so these values are not quoted as one fixed figure and follow the COA and TDS for each lot; the properties below identify the material.
| Parameter | Typical Value |
|---|---|
| Appearance | White, odorless crystalline powder |
| Decomposition | From about 350 °C |
| Solubility | Almost insoluble in water and common solvents |
| Halogen / Phosphorus | None (nitrogen based) |
| Grades | Standard; fine particle; surface treated |
| Assay, moisture, particle size | Reported on COA / TDS per lot |
Packaging, Documents and Ordering
- Packed in 25 kg woven bags and FIBC bulk bags; store sealed in a cool, dry, ventilated place and keep the powder dry.
- MCA is a halogen free, low smoke and low toxicity material generally handled as general cargo, with the final shipping class confirmed on the SDS; fine powder handling uses dust extraction and standard PPE. Each lot carries a COA and TDS with assay, moisture and particle size, plus SDS, and samples are supported for trial.
- For a quote, UATChem needs the resin type and glass fiber level, target flame class, particle or treated grade, quantity, packing and destination port.
FAQ
Q: What is melamine cyanurate used for?
A: It is a halogen free nitrogen flame retardant used mainly in unfilled PA6, PA66, TPU, PBT and epoxy, for low smoke parts.
Q: Does melamine cyanurate contain halogen or phosphorus?
A: No, it is nitrogen only, halogen and phosphorus free, with low smoke and toxicity, and it does not corrode processing molds.
Q: Which MCA grade suits glass filled nylon?
A: It works best alone in unfilled nylon; glass filled nylon usually needs a fine or treated grade with a phosphorus synergist.
