Antioxidant SP (Styrenated Phenol) CAS 61788-44-1
Antioxidant SP, or styrenated phenol (CAS 61788-44-1), is a non-staining phenolic antioxidant sold as a light yellow to amber viscous liquid. It protects natural and synthetic rubber, latex and plastics from heat and oxygen aging without staining or blooming, so it is the standard pick for white and light-colored goods such as shoe soles, hoses, seals and carpet backing. The liquid form is easy to meter and disperses well in NR, SBR, BR and NBR. We supply it in 25 kg and 200 kg drums. Tell us your polymer and color needs, and we will confirm the grade and dosage.

What Antioxidant SP Is
Antioxidant SP is a liquid phenolic antioxidant made by reacting phenol with styrene. Rubber and plastic compounds slowly go brittle and crack when heat and oxygen attack the polymer chains, and this additive interrupts that aging process so parts keep their flexibility and strength for longer. As a liquid it pours and meters cleanly, disperses evenly through a compound and barely volatilizes during high-temperature processing.
Why It Is Used in Light-Colored Rubber
The big advantage of SP is that it is non-staining and non-discoloring. Amine antioxidants protect well at high temperature but turn light compounds yellow or brown over time, while phenolic SP leaves white, pastel and transparent goods clean and shows almost no bloom on the surface. That is why it is the default antioxidant for colored and light-colored rubber and latex products where appearance matters. For heavy-duty, very high-heat parts it can be blended with other antioxidants for extra protection.
Where It Is Used
- Rubber and latex. NR, SBR, BR and NBR goods such as shoe soles, hoses, belts, seals, gaskets, sports flooring and carpet backing, plus tire sidewalls and general mechanical parts.
- Plastics and TPE. Stabilizer for polyolefins, EVA, polyacetal and thermoplastic elastomer compounds during extrusion and molding and in service.
- Adhesives and other systems. Keeps rubber-based adhesives and sealants from hardening, and stabilizes oils, plasticizers and lubricants against oxidation.
Typical Specifications
| Test Item | Standard Value |
|---|---|
| Appearance | Light yellow to amber viscous liquid |
| Active Matter | ≥ 98.0% |
| Density at 20 °C | 1.08 – 1.12 g/cm³ |
| Flash Point (open cup) | ≥ 180 °C |
| Acid Value | ≤ 0.5 mg KOH/g |
Packaging, Storage and Ordering
- Packed in 25 kg plastic drums and 200 kg steel drums; keep sealed below 30 °C, away from fire, direct heat and strong oxidizers.
- The liquid thickens in the cold, so warm the drum gently before use to restore easy pouring and accurate dosing. It is non-hazardous for normal ocean and land transport.
- Avoid skin and eye contact and wear gloves and goggles when handling. COA, TDS and SDS come with every order, samples are available, and quotes go out within one working day. It compounds well alongside Stearic Acid CAS 57-11-4 and Rubber Accelerator TBBS CAS 95-31-8 in standard rubber recipes.
FAQ
Q: Will it stain light-colored rubber?
A: No. It is non-staining and non-discoloring with low bloom, made for white and pastel goods.
Q: Which rubbers is it used in?
A: NR, SBR, BR and NBR, plus latex; it also stabilizes polyolefins, EVA and TPE compounds.
Q: How does it compare with amine antioxidants?
A: It keeps color clean with low bloom; amines take higher heat but stain light goods.
