Chloroprene Rubber (CR) CAS 9010-98-4

Chloroprene Rubber, better known as neoprene (CAS 9010-98-4), is a synthetic rubber made from chloroprene, sold as pale yellow to tan bales or crumb. It balances oil resistance, weather and ozone resistance, flame retardancy and toughness better than most general-purpose rubbers, which is why it shows up in seals, hoses, cable jackets, conveyor belts and contact adhesives. We supply G and W series grades with controlled Mooney viscosity in 25 kg bales. Tell us the application and target Mooney, and we will match the grade.

What Chloroprene Rubber Is

Chloroprene rubber is the polymer of chloroprene, a synthetic rubber that has carried the trade name neoprene for decades. It is a solid elastomer, supplied as wrapped bales or crumb, that gets vulcanized and compounded just like natural rubber. The chlorine in its backbone gives it an unusual combination of properties: it resists oil and grease, stands up to sun, ozone and weather, slows burning, and keeps its strength over a wide temperature range.

Picking the Right Grade

CR is not one product; it comes in families that behave differently in processing. Fast-crystallizing grades, the G series, build strength quickly and are the classic choice for contact adhesives, where fast grab matters. Slow-crystallizing grades, the W series, stay flexible and stable for years, which is why static seals, gaskets and hoses are made from them. Beyond the series, Mooney viscosity tells you how the rubber processes, higher for stiffer, more shape-holding compounds and lower for easy flow. Tell us the part and process, and we will point you to the right series rather than leave you guessing.

Where It Is Used

  • Seals and gaskets. Window seals, flange gaskets and automotive weatherstripping that face years of outdoor exposure without cracking.
  • Wire and cable. Jackets on power cables, mining cable and automotive harnesses that need insulation, flame retardancy and oil resistance.
  • Belts and hoses. V-belts, conveyor belting and industrial hoses for chemical, refrigeration and marine service.
  • Adhesives and linings. Contact adhesives for shoe, wood and construction bonding, plus corrosion linings and roll coverings for tanks and steel equipment.

General Purpose Grade Specifications (CR-230 type)

Test Item Typical Value
Mooney Viscosity ML(1+4) 100 °C 45 – 55
Chlorine Content 35 – 39%
Tensile Strength (vulcanized) ≥ 18.0 MPa
Elongation at Break ≥ 400%
Shore A Hardness 55 – 65
Volatile Matter ≤ 1.0%

Packaging, Storage and Ordering

  • Packed in 25 kg PE-lined kraft bales, palletized in 500 kg units, with crumb and pre-mixed compounds on request. Store sealed below 25 °C, away from sun, ozone, heat and flame; ozone and warmth gradually harden the rubber, so rotate stock first in, first out.
  • The bales are non-hazardous for normal ocean and land transport. Crumb grades raise dust, so wear a mask and gloves when handling.
  • COA, TDS and SDS come with every order, samples are available, and quotes go out within one working day. It is compounded with Antioxidant SP CAS 61788-44-1 for light-colored goods and processed with Stearic Acid CAS 57-11-4 in the cure package.

FAQ

Q: Which grade do I need, G or W?

A: Fast-crystallizing G types set quickly for adhesives; slow W types stay flexible for seals.

Q: How does CR compare with NBR and EPDM?

A: Balanced oil, ozone and flame resistance with toughness; NBR beats it on oil, EPDM on heat.

Q: How is CR cured?

A: Zinc oxide plus magnesium oxide, with ethylene thiourea or sulfur donors for faster cure.
