About Hydroxyethyl Cellulose

Hydroxyethyl cellulose is a cellulose-derived polymer used to control the consistency of water-based formulations. It dissolves in cold or hot water and forms shear-thinning solutions: viscosity falls during stirring or application. This behavior is useful in products that need body in the container and flow during use.

Main Applications

  • Water-based paints and coatings. HEC builds viscosity and helps keep pigments suspended in latex paints. The grade influences in-can consistency, brush or roller application and leveling.
  • Shampoos and body washes. It adjusts viscosity and flow in surfactant-based formulations. The surfactant system, HEC grade and addition level all affect the finished texture.
  • Creams and lotions. HEC thickens the water phase. Personal care formulations require a grade with documented suitability for the intended use.

Viscosity and Grade Selection

HEC grades differ in viscosity and hydration behavior. For a replacement, compare the current material’s data sheet with the proposed grade. A CAS number identifies the polymer, but does not specify its viscosity grade.

Selection Point Details to Compare
Solution viscosity Reported range, solution concentration and measurement temperature
Test method Viscometer type, spindle and rotational speed
Dispersion and hydration Surface-treated or untreated grade; preparation conditions and hydration time
Application requirements Coating performance or personal care suitability, according to the intended formulation

Compare viscosity under the same test conditions. A result measured at 1% concentration cannot be directly matched to one measured at 2%. The grade specification sets acceptance limits; a certificate of analysis (COA) reports the batch results.

Dispersion and Hydration

Dispersion and full hydration are separate stages. Some HEC grades have a surface treatment that delays hydration, giving the powder time to disperse before it thickens the water. Follow the selected grade’s preparation instructions for mixing, pH and temperature, and allow hydration to finish before assessing viscosity. Check the finished formula for flow, appearance and stability at the intended addition level.

Packaging and Quotation

Include your preferred bag weight, lining and order quantity in the enquiry so packing can be confirmed with the quotation. Keep HEC powder sealed and protected from moisture during storage; follow the supplied safety data sheet (SDS) for handling.

For a quotation from UATChem, send your application, viscosity requirement or current grade reference, quantity and destination port. Request the proposed grade’s technical data sheet (TDS), SDS and a representative COA for review before ordering. Include any sample requirement for formulation trials.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose FAQ

Is HEC the same as CMC?

No. HEC is nonionic, while sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is anionic. Both are cellulose-based thickeners, but matching a viscosity value does not make them interchangeable in a formulation.

Does a higher-viscosity HEC always give better paint performance?

No. Solution viscosity is one selection factor. The paint also needs the right balance of pigment suspension, application flow and leveling. Evaluate the proposed grade in the intended paint formula.
