Basic Zinc Carbonate (CAS 5263-02-5) is a fine white zinc powder with two useful reactions: heated, it breaks down into highly active zinc oxide, and in water its zinc binds hydrogen sulfide into a harmless solid. About Basic Zinc Carbonate
Basic zinc carbonate is a soft white powder that holds its zinc in a form industry can put to work. Warm it past its decomposition point and it turns into very fine, highly active zinc oxide, the form rubber needs for curing. Put it in water and the zinc lets go gradually, which is exactly what drilling mud needs to neutralise hydrogen sulfide. The same powder, in a purer grade, is also the base of calamine in skin care and a gentle zinc source in animal feed.
Main Uses
- Rubber and tyres. Used as a vulcanisation activator: it becomes active zinc oxide during curing, so less is needed than with standard zinc oxide, and the fine, light result suits translucent tubing and light-coloured soles.
- Oil and gas drilling. A hydrogen-sulfide scavenger: the zinc reacts with H2S in alkaline mud to form harmless, insoluble zinc sulfide, protecting crews and steel from the toxic gas. Pairs with Barium Sulfate CAS 7727-43-7 in the same weighted mud system.
- Cosmetics and pharmacy. The recognised base of calamine (basic zinc carbonate tinted with iron oxide), used in lotions, pressed powders and mild astringent skin preparations.
- Feed and specialty use. A bioavailable zinc source in mineral feed premixes, and a process chemical in rayon making and selected catalysts.
