Barium Sulfate CAS 7727-43-7

Barium Sulfate (barite, CAS 7727-43-7) is a natural mineral ground into a fine white powder. It is chemically inert and does not dissolve in water, acids or alkalis, which is why industry trusts it in drilling muds, paints, plastics and X-ray imaging. UATChem supplies two lines: drilling grade at 92% BaSO4 with specific gravity 4.20, and industrial grade at 98% with specific gravity 4.35, in 25 kg PE-lined bags and 1000 kg bulk bags, with COA, TDS and SDS on every order.

Product Overview

Barium sulfate is ground from natural barite ore and is one of the heaviest common powders, and that density is the reason it is used. It does not react with most chemicals and stays stable in water, acid and alkaline conditions, so it can be added to tough environments without side effects. It is also safe for human use precisely because it does not dissolve: unlike other barium salts, it passes through the body without being absorbed.

Applications

  • Oil and gas drilling. Added to drilling mud as a weighting agent, it gives the mud enough weight to hold back underground pressure and prevent blowouts, and it stays chemically stable in the well. Works alongside CMC for fluid-loss control and Basic Zinc Carbonate for hydrogen-sulfide scavenging in the same mud system.
  • Paints and coatings. A white filler that adds opacity, gloss control and weather resistance, and helps paints cover well and last outdoors.
  • Plastics and rubber. Adds density, surface hardness and sound damping to engineering plastics, rubber and composites.
  • Paper and board. Improves brightness, smoothness and print quality.
  • Medical imaging. Pharmaceutical-purity barium sulfate is the contrast agent in barium meal and enema X-ray examinations. The same inertness that protects a wellbore keeps it safe in the body.

Packaging, Storage and Ordering

  • Packaging: 25 kg PE-lined bags or 1000 kg bulk bags; containers on request; private labelling available.
  • The powder clumps under high humidity. Keep pallets wrapped and bags sealed, in a dry warehouse.
  • Wear a dust mask, goggles and gloves when mixing; non-hazardous cargo.
  • COA, TDS, SDS and API 13A test data on request; samples available; quotes within one working day. Tell us the grade (drilling or industrial) and quantity in your RFQ.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between natural barite and precipitated barium sulfate?

A: Natural barite is ground ore for mud weighting; precipitated is synthetic, finer and purer.

Q: Is barium sulfate toxic like other barium salts?

A: No, it is insoluble in water and stomach acid, so it is not absorbed by the body.

Q: Is barium sulfate used in medical imaging?

A: Yes, it is used as a contrast medium in barium meal and enema X-ray imaging.

Q: Does barium sulfate react with drilling fluids?

A: No, it is chemically inert and only adds density, so it suits most muds.

Q: Which grade should I choose?

A: Drilling 92% SG 4.20 for mud weighting; industrial 98% SG 4.35 for fillers.
